Gary Silva - Drummer:
Gary Silva was born and raised in the Monterey Bay Area, moved to Marin and attended school there during the late sixties. There he met Muddy Waters’ guitarist, Luther Tucker and the two became roommates as well as bandmates. Via Tucker’s connections to the Chicago Blues scene, Silva quickly became a highly sought after drummer and began backing the Legends of Blues including Big Mama Thornton, Albert Collins, Big Joe Turner and John Lee Hooker, to name a few. Mark Naftalin,(formerly of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band), hired Silva as "House Drummer" for his award winning live radio broadcasts on KTIM and his weekly Blues shows in Marin. Silva spent years honing his skills backing Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Irma Thomas, Little Johnny Taylor, as well as Rock-n-Roll legends Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley. Silva joined ranks with another Butterfield alumnus, Elvin Bishop, recording two critically acclaimed records on the Alligator label and touring Japan, Europe, and North America where he also performed with Bonnie Raitt and George Thorogood.
Silva's versatility is vast. He had a stint with the New Riders of the Purple Sage and still lends his skills to harmonica virtuoso Norton Buffalo. For 35 years he's played it all! Blues, Rock-n-Roll, Jazz/Fusion and Country. Silva has been a Grammy nominee for his work with Ron Thompson & the Resistors and has received 3 Bay Area Music Awards ("Bammy’s” - two with Naftalin and one with Ron Thompson). The last several years Silva has spent time recording with many bay area musicians and has lent his talents to four recording projects this year alone. Currently Silva is playing with the Volker Strifler Band, and can be found on their new CD, The Dance Goes On, a Blue Rock'it Records release. Silva says this is the best band and the best recording he's been involved with in 10 years.
